What is Infrared Health Therapy?
Good Day Sunshine: Have you ever been outside on a partly cloudy spring day of about 50 degrees F. and felt quite comfortable until the sun was suddenly obscured by a cloud? Although the air temperature had not had time to drop, you felt chilled, as the cloud would not let the warming infrared rays through to reach you.
Infrared radiation accounts for over half of the energy emitted by the sun. The remaining energy is emitted in the form of visible light. Infrared radiation is readily absorbed by many kinds of matter and is thus effective in warming the substances on which if falls. Other types of light, such as microwaves, travel as heat energy. However, in order for infrared rays to have a heating effect they must hit matter and reflect off its surface. This phenomenon is responsible for the cold temperatures at high altitudes. On mountain peaks, for example, surface area decreases greatly, and there is less matter for infrared rays to reflect from, or for “resonant absorption”. Therefore heat is not emitted.
Far-infrared light penetrates beyond the skin level and is absorbed efficiently by cells below, whereas visible light is mostly bounced of the skin surface. Near-infrared is mostly absorbed at the skin level and raises the skin temperature. Far-infrared can penetrate up to 4 centimeters (about 1-1/2 inches), exciting the vibrational energy of molecules and resonating with cellular frequencies. The effects of Far-infrared rays promote bioprocesses such as increased metabolism and blood circulation, and can raise core body temperature.
